CARPENTRY

Carpenters work on all phases of construction work;  including concrete formwork, wood and steel framing, drywall, finish carpentry, floor coverings, builder’s hardware, ceilings, scaffolding, cabinetmaker, building remodeling and repairing, pile driving and bridge construction.
Length of Apprenticeship:
Four (4) Years 

Classroom training:  160 hours per year

*Four 40-hour weeks of class per year/one class per quarter

On-the Job training:  a minimum of 1300 hours per year

*Work must be performed for a union contractor 

Wage Information:
(Wages may vary depending on type and location of work.)

1st Year/ 1st 6 months   40% of journeyman wage
1st Year/ 2nd 6 months   50% of journeyman wage
2nd Year/ 1st 6 months    60% of journeyman wage
2nd Year/ 2nd 6 months   70% of journeyman wage
3rd Year    80% of journeyman wage
4th Year   90% of journeyman wage
Journeyman 100% of journeyman wage

Basic Requirements:
*Must be at least 17-years old.
*Social Security Card
*Birth Certificate
*Drivers License
*All educational transcripts
*Diploma or G.E.D. certificate (recommended but not required)
*Green Card or Work Visa
*DD214 from military (if applicable)
*Must pass a Math Qualifying Test (70% or higher)

Completion of the above requirements will qualify the applicant for an interview.

Upon successful completion of the interview, the applicant will be placed on a list of approved applicants.

Working Conditions:
Carpenters work indoors and outdoors and in all types of weather. Carpenters also work underground and at high elevations.

Recommended Preparatory Classes:
Mathematics (including algebra), science, communications, vocational classes, and shop classes.

Abilities:
*Must be in good physical condition.
*Must have good mental abilities and positive attitude.
*Drug screen and physical exam are also required.

Work Experience: (Helpful, but not necessary for acceptance.)
Working with hand and power tools.

Entry Process:
*Individuals must meet the basic requirements listed above.
*Applicant must also meet with the local business representative to determine availability of work.
*Applicant will begin apprenticeship program upon signing the apprenticeship agreement.  However,
  pay increases are based on obtaining required classroom hours and classroom training, as well as
  on-the-job hours.
