ELECTRICIAN

Electricians install new wiring in newly-constructed industrial, commercial, and residential buildings.   They also repair and maintain the wiring in existing buildings.  The scope of work for the journeyman electrician also includes working with various systems and infrastructures; machine-tool wiring, heating, ventilation & air conditioning systems, telephone, data voice, fiber optics, lighting systems, fire alarm systems, temperature and motor controls, energy management, and security alarms.
Length of Apprenticeship:
ResidentialThree
(3) Years 

*Apprentices receive a minimum of 180 hours of classroom training each year.  Classroom
 instruction will be held one 8-hour day every two weeks from June – May.

*Apprentices are required to receive 6,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Commercial:  Five (5) Years

*Apprentices receive a minimum of 180 hours of classroom training each year.  Classroom

instruction will be held one 8-hour day every two weeks from June – May.

*Apprentices are required to receive 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Communications:  Three (3) Years

*Apprentices receive a minimum of 180 hours of classroom training each year.  Classroom

instruction will be held one 8-hour day every two weeks from June – May.

*Apprentices are required to receive 4,800 hours of on-the-job training.

Wage Information:
Residential:

Period 1 45% of journeyman wage
Period 2 50% of journeyman wage
Period 3 60% of journeyman wage
Period 4 70% of journeyman wage
Period 5 80% of journeyman wage
Period 6 90% of journeyman wage
Commercial:
Period 1 45% of journeyman wage
Period 2 50% of journeyman wage
Period 3 55% of journeyman wage
Period 4 65% of journeyman wage
Period 5 80% of journeyman wage
Period 6 90% of journeyman wage

The following applies to Residential, Communications 
and Commercial Electricians, unless otherwise noted.

(A.A.S.) Associate in Applied Science Degree in Electrical Construction Technology from an area community college

Basic Requirements:
*Must be a high school graduate or have a GED (a copy of GED required) prior to application period.
*Must be at least 18 years of age, prior to application period. 
*Must have two semesters of algebra (high school or college, equivalent to
Algebra 1)  with a minimum
 of a “C” in each semester, completed prior to
application period.
*Must be a resident of the jurisdiction of  IBEW Local #176 for one year (Will, Grundy, Kankakee,
 Bureau, LaSalle, Iroquois, Henry, Ford, Stark, and Putnam Counties). 
*Have  acceptable physical health as determined by a physician, including drug testing, to be able to
 safely perform the tasks of a construction electrician.

*Evidence of a qualifying grade on an aptitude test as prescribed by the JATC.

Working Conditions:
Electricians work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Recommended Preparatory Classes:
Mathematics, electrical theory, blueprint reading, electronics classes, science, communications, shop, vocational, and reading comprehension.

Abilities:
*Must be able to work in confined spaces and at high levels. 
*Must be able to lift heavy objects and be in good physical condition.

*Must have a good attitude and be able to work well with people.

Work Experience: (Helpful, but not necessary for acceptance.)
Familiarity with any type of construction or electrical work, and a good work ethic would be beneficial.

Entry Process:
*Complete application at I.B.E.W. #176 JATC.
*Take and pass a general aptitude test.  
*Take and pass an oral interview.
*Take and pass a physical exam, including a drug test.
*Names of applicants who pass the above tests are placed on an eligibility list according to scores.
