ELECTRICIAN

Electricians install new wiring in newly-constructed industrial, commercial, and residential buildings.   They also repair and maintain the wiring in existing buildings.  The scope of work for the journeyman electrician also includes working with various systems and infrastructures; machine-tool wiring, heating, ventilation & air conditioning systems, telephone, data voice, fiber optics, lighting systems, fire alarm systems, temperature and motor controls, energy management, and security alarms.
Length of Apprenticeship:
Commercial:  Five (5) Years

*Apprentices receive a minimum of 180 hours of classroom training each year.  Classroom

instruction is held three hours a night, one day per week from August June.

*Apprentices are required to receive 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Wage Information:

Period 1 45% of journeyman wage
Period 2 50% of journeyman wage
Period 3 55% of journeyman wage
Period 4 65% of journeyman wage
Period 5 75% of journeyman wage
Period 6 85% of journeyman wage

Basic Requirements:
*Must be a high school graduate or have a G.E.D. (copy of  G.E.D. required) prior to the application
 period.

*Must be at least 18 years of age, prior to application period. 
*Must have two semesters of algebra (high school or college, equivalent to Algebra 1)
with a 
 
minimum of a “C” in each semester, completed prior to the application period.

*Must be a resident of the jurisdiction of  IBEW Local #601 for one year (Champaign,
Dewitt,
 Douglas, Ford, Iroquois, LaSalle, Livingston, McLean, Platt, Putnam, Marshall,
and Woodford.)
*Must take a drug test
prior to employment.

Working Conditions:
Electricians work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Recommended Preparatory Classes:
Mathematics, electrical theory, electronics classes, science, communications, blueprint reading, shop, vocational, and reading comprehension.

Abilities:
*Must be able to work in confined spaces and at high levels.
*Must be in good physical condition and be able to lift heavy objects.
*Must have a good attitude and be able to work well with people.

Work Experience: (Helpful, but not necessary for acceptance.)
Familiarity with any type of construction or electrical work, and a good work ethic would be beneficial.

Entry Process:
*Must complete application at I.B.E.W. #601 JATC.
*Must pay a $30.00 application fee.
*Must take and pass a three (3) hour Aptitude Test.
*Must take and pass an oral interview.
*Must take and pass a drug test.
*Must have a copy of birth certificate. 
*Must have an official high school diploma/transcript or G.E.D. 
*Applicants who meet the above requirements and pass the aptitude and drug tests will be placed on
 an eligibility list according to scores.
