LABORER

Laborers perform a diverse number of jobs, such as asbestos removal, asphalt, concrete  placement,  lead  base  paint  removal,  hazardous waste removal,  grade checker,  jackhammer and pavement  breaker  operation,  demolition, sewer laser operation and pipelaying, trenching and shoring,  mason tender, scaffold erection, flagging and traffic control, and  general housekeeping on the jobsite to help keep it safer for everyone.
Length of Apprenticeship:
Three
(3) Years and (2,400/6,000 hours) of on the job diversified work and training, excluding time spent in related instruction.  Apprentices average 144 hours per year in the classroom.

*Apprentices complete 48 hours of safety training, as well as three (3) weeks of  related 

instruction before being sent to any job.

*Apprentices are required to attend three (3) weeks of related training each year. 

*Apprentices must obtain on-the-job training by working for union contractors throughout the term 

of apprenticeship. 

Wage Information: (Pay levels vary depending on collective bargaining agreements in different areas.)

1st Year 75% of journeyman wage - Full Benefits
2nd Year 85% of journeyman wage - Full Benefits
3rd Year 95% of journeyman wage - Full Benefits

Beginning January 1, 2001, upon successful completion of the required Phase I Training (4 weeks), Training Fund will pay retro-active fringe benefits on apprentice for this 4-week period.  Employers are then required to make fringe benefit contributions upon employment of any apprentice.

Basic Requirements:
*Must be 18-years of age at the time of application.
*Must be able to read & write.
*Must be a legal resident of the United States.
*Must complete an aptitude test and oral interview.
*$20.00 administrative fee (no checks).
*DRUG TESTING SHALL BE REQUIRED.

At the time of aptitude testing, applicant must submit the following:
1)  Birth Certificate or documentation showing proof of age and valid drivers license.
2)  High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate
3)  Transcripts of grades (High School, G.E.D. Scores, College, if applicable)
4)  Military transfer or discharge, if in the military.
5)  References (Optional).  Two (2) favorable references from the Associated General Contractors
      members, other signatory contractors, or Laborer Local Business Managers will be accepted.

Working Conditions:
Construction Craft Laborers work in all types of weather elements.

Recommended Preparatory Classes:
Upon acceptance into the apprenticeship program, all applicants will be required to successfully complete 46 hours of safety training.

Abilities:
Must be physically able to perform the work of the trade.

A reading, understanding, writing and communicating ability as it would enable the applicant to perform the tasks of the Construction Craft Laborer in a safe manner and comprehend the subject matter taught, in English only, in related instruction.

Work Experience: (Helpful, but not necessary for acceptance.)
Experience working in any hands-on construction work is beneficial to applicant.  Any type of construction safety training would be beneficial to apprentice.

Entry Process:
Applications are customarily taken once per calendar year, at specific times determined by the Board of Trustees.  Applications are available two (2) weeks (Monday-Friday each week).  Individuals meeting the basic requirements listed above, must make application at either their local area Illinois Employment & Training Center Office, or Laborer Local Union Hall.

At the conclusion of the application period, all applications are forwarded to the Training Fund Office for processing.  All applicants are then notified by mail of the locations, dates, and times that they should report for aptitude testing and oral interviews.

At the time of aptitude testing, the applicant must meet all basic requirements and all required documentation and administrative fees must be presented.

All applicants are required to take a written aptitude test and submit to an interview administered by the Illinois Laborers' & Contractors Joint Apprenticeship & Training Program Staff.

The Board of Trustees will then review all applicants and their scores.  Applicants will be notified by mail if they have been selected for the Apprenticeship Program, or if they have been placed on a waiting list, for the program.
