MILLWRIGHTS

The work of the Millwright involves the assembly, erection, installation, and maintenance of all types of industrial equipment and machinery according to layout plans,  blueprints and  other schematic drawings.  Millwrights have skills in the use of  a  variety of hand and power  tools, welding and brazing of all types of metals and the use  of welding equipment, optical tooling,  precision measuring  tools, hoists  and cranes.

Millwright Local #2158 and the Illowa Millwright JATC are affiliated with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America which was founded in 1881.  Local #2158 is located in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Geographical Area:
The following counties in Illinois:  Stephenson & Winnebago, Ogle County with the boundaries as follows:  the extended longitudinal line of the West boundary of Winnebago County South to the Line 4 miles North of the city of Oregon and thereon east to the Eastern longitudinal boundary of Ogle County, thence North too the Southern boundary of Boone County.  Bureau, Carroll, Dekalb, Henderson, Henry, JoDaviess, LaSalle, Lee, Marshall, Mercer, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark, Whiteside.

The following counties in Iowa:  Adair, Allamakee, Appanoose, Benton, Blackhawk, Boone, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Calhoun, Cedar, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Clark, Clayton, Clinton, Dallas, Davis, Decatur, Delaware, Des Moines, Dubuque, Emmet, Fayette, Floyd, Franklin, Green, Grundy, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Howard, Humboldt, Kowa, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Kossuth, Lee, Linn, Louisa, Lucas, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Mitchell, Monroe, Muscatine, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Polk, Poweshiek, Ringgold, Scott, Story, Tama, Union, Van Buren, Worth and Wright.

Length of Apprenticeship:
Millwrights and Technical Engineers receive training through a formal four (4) year apprenticeship process.  The Apprenticeship training program consists of 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.  In addition, apprentices are required to attend supplemental classroom instruction in course work established by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America for a minimum of 800 hours.  In addition they must attend all scheduled safety training.

The training they received during the apprenticeship includes the use of tools, layout, experience with machinery, experience involving engineering principals, optical instruments and related information blueprints, maintenance of machinery and equipment and welding and brazing.

Wage Information: (All zones excluding Zone 2 in Iowa)

Pre-Apprentice 40% of journeyman wage
1st Year 60% of journeyman wage
2nd Year 70% of journeyman wage
3rd Year 80% of journeyman wage
4th Year 90% of journeyman wage

Basic Requirements:
*Must be 18-years of age.
*Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D. Certificate.)
*Must submit a copy of birth certificate.
*Must have a good mechanical aptitude and interest in the millwright craft.
*Must have a good aptitude for mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry).

Working Conditions:
Millwrights work indoors and outdoors and in all types of weather.

Recommended Preparatory Classes:
Mathematics (including algebra, geometry, trigonometry), vocational and shop classes.

Abilities:
Must be physically able to perform the work of the trade.

Work Experience: (Helpful, but not necessary for acceptance.)
Experience working in any hands-on construction work is beneficial to applicant.

Entry Process:
No applications will be mailed to any individuals.  All interested applicants must call the JATC office (319) 332-3595 to set up an appointment for an orientation and at that time applications will be issued and questions will be answered.
